In preparation for the 250th Anniversary of the United States of America, the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum selected REFF Services, through its General Contractor, to restore one of the historic railcars from the legendary American Freedom Train (AFT).

The American Freedom Train became an iconic symbol of patriotism during the nation's Bicentennial celebration in 1975–1976, traveling throughout the United States and bringing historical exhibits and artifacts to millions of visitors. As America prepares to celebrate its 250th anniversary, several restored railcars will once again participate in commemorative activities across the country, while this particular railcar will remain permanently displayed at the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum as a centerpiece of its collection.
Visitors can learn more about the history of the American Freedom Train through the American Freedom Train Historical Archive and the ongoing restoration efforts being coordinated through the America 250 initiative.
Before restoration began, the railcar had suffered decades of environmental exposure, resulting in extensive corrosion, paint failure, deteriorated metal surfaces, and accumulated debris. To preserve the railcar's historical integrity, severely deteriorated components were replaced with custom-fabricated parts designed to match the original construction.

REFF Services was responsible for the complete exterior restoration, including surface preparation, paint removal, rust remediation, industrial coating application, and historically accurate decal installation. The restoration process required approximately three months from initial preparation through final coating application.

One of the most critical phases of the project involved comprehensive paint removal and surface preparation. Years of weather exposure had caused widespread coating failure and corrosion, making proper substrate preparation essential for long-term coating performance.

REFF Services utilized specialized mechanical paint removal methods to eliminate failing coatings, corrosion, and contaminants while preserving the integrity of the underlying metal surfaces. Every area was carefully prepared to create the ideal surface profile for industrial coating application.

Prior to coating application, REFF Services performed extensive exterior cleaning and power washing of the railcar. Dirt, grease, environmental contaminants, and embedded debris accumulated over decades were removed using professional cleaning methods and high-pressure washing equipment.

Power washing played a critical role in preparing the railcar for coating application by ensuring all surfaces were clean and free of contaminants that could compromise adhesion.
To provide long-term protection against corrosion and environmental exposure, REFF Services applied a high-performance industrial coating system engineered for demanding outdoor conditions.

The coating system included:
The epoxy primer creates a durable protective barrier that helps prevent corrosion and moisture intrusion, while the polyurethane paint provides excellent weather resistance, abrasion resistance, and long-term appearance retention.
After completion of the industrial coating system, REFF Services installed all exterior decals, striping, lettering, and graphics. Our team carefully measured and reproduced every decorative element to maintain historical accuracy and preserve the railcar's iconic appearance.
Special attention was given to the signature circular graphics and striping patterns. The primary logo was recreated using artwork associated with the original restoration efforts from the 1970s, helping preserve the authenticity of this historic exhibit.
The completed restoration received attention from local news organizations, railroad preservation groups, and American Freedom Train supporters across the country.

The American Freedom Train remains one of the most significant traveling historical exhibits in American history. Through expert train restoration, industrial coatings, paint removal, power washing, corrosion remediation, epoxy primer application, polyurethane paint systems, and historic preservation techniques, REFF Services helped restore and preserve an important piece of the nation's heritage.

Today, the restored railcar stands as a lasting tribute to America's past and will continue to inspire future generations as part of the country's 250th Anniversary celebration.
